Teachify
A tutor at every desk. Teachify reads handwritten math through a phone or desk camera, finds the exact line where a student went wrong, and gives a hint instead of the answer.
The short version
The problem
A wrong final answer hides where the mistake began. Students stay quiet, teachers have no spare hours, and nobody can watch every line.
The product
A camera watches the page. Teachify checks each step against the one above, flags the first bad line, and gives a hint. Teachers see who is stuck, why, and what to ask.
Why it can be trusted
A fine-tuned handwriting reader was tested on held-out data, and a symbolic math engine checks the algebra instead of trusting AI alone.
Target: Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Pre-Calc and Calculus, in middle and high school. Built for a hackathon using Google Cloud, Thinking Machines' Tinker and an Entrinsik Informer challenge.
3(x+2) = 2x+11
3x+2 = 2x+11 <-- first wrong line: the 3 never multiplied the 2
x = 9 <-- valid from the line above, but the answer should be 5
The pitch
Five slides, about one minute each, followed by three backup slides. The deck is a private Claude artifact; the owner has to share it.
| # | Slide | What it says |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Story | Prince at 11:40 pm on problem 7 cannot see which line went wrong. The tutor loved teaching, but there was only one of them. Teachers work 53 hours a week, and 40% of high schoolers hesitate to admit confusion. |
| 2 | Teachify | Personal Tutor plus school versions A, B and C. Teachers see every flag and stay in charge. |
| 3 | Live demo | Phone at home, desk camera in class, both feeding the teacher site on Google Cloud. |
| 4 | Proof | Base model 52% against 76.5% fine-tuned, on held-out lines, plus the pipeline and Tinker cost. |
| 5 | Business and close | $7.9B tutoring market, 15.6M students, pricing, the ask, then questions. "Every student deserves someone to point at line 1." |
Facts used in the pitch
| Claim | Source | Confidence |
|---|---|---|
| Teachers average 53 hours a week, against 44 for similar working adults; about 15 fall outside contract | RAND, State of the American Teacher, 2024 | Primary survey |
| About 40% of high schoolers regularly hesitate to admit confusion | Character Lab, 1,000+ students | All subjects, not only math |
| Lower-achieving students are least likely to ask for help | Ryan and Pintrich, middle school math help-seeking | Published research |
| US tutoring and exam-prep businesses earned $7.9B in 2024 | Reported US Census estimate, found through a secondary summary | Verify before presenting |
| 15.6M US public school students in grades 9 to 12 | NCES, fall 2023 | Primary data |
| About 77% of public schools ban phones during class | NCES figure, via secondary reporting | Confirm the primary table |
| Chromebooks dominate school devices; iPads are a minority | Older Futuresource data and recent blogs | Direction only; no reliable current percentage |
Products and pricing
These prices are proposals. They are not market-tested or based on a measured cost model.
| Product | Where | What it does | Proposed price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal Tutor Free | Home, phone | 3 photo checks a day, finds the wrong line, gives a hint | $0 |
| Personal Tutor Plus | Home, phone | Unlimited checks, step-by-step hints, parent report | $9.99 a month or $79 a year |
| A · Detect | Classroom | Desk camera reads work; a light turns on when a step is wrong | $8 per student per year |
| B · Assist | Classroom | Detect plus an AI helper over headphones | $15 per student per year |
| C · Quiet mode | Classroom | Detect plus automatic grading, with flagged lines returned to the student | $12 per student per year |
| Full classroom | Classroom | A, B and C, plus school reports and teacher training | $20 per student per year |
Other proposals: desk camera kit at $49, free first-semester pilot for up to 5 classrooms, and volume pricing for districts. Example: 1,000 math students on Full classroom is $20,000 a year. Across 15.6M high schoolers at $20, the school market is about $312M a year.
Most schools ban phones during class, so phones are positioned for home and desk cameras for class. Most schools use Chromebooks, which makes a Chromebook webcam version a sensible next step.
There are two codebases
This is the most important thing to understand before changing anything.
This repo: the live website
Demo stage, student page, teacher dashboard, pricing page, 3D tripod, Informer feed and firmware. It is what runs at the live URL. Its source is on this page.
luelhagos/memhr: the teammate's app
A private repo. It holds the camera-first tutor and the Tinker fine-tune work. Its code is deliberately not copied here, and it is not connected to the live website.
Teammate's approach, from its README: one Gemini call reads the page and judges each step against the line above; SymPy re-checks each algebra step; only an error both agree on is given as a hint. Home mode uses a browser camera with voice hints in English, Spanish or Tigrinya. Classroom mode reads a fixed RTSP camera and keeps frames on a classroom server. Deploying it on Cloud Run needs a gemini-key secret, which has not been created.
Architecture of the live app
The core idea
AI does not decide whether typed or transcribed math is correct. For an equation problem, a line is valid if it has the same solution set as the problem, so the first error is the smallest k where S(L_k) != S(P). Derivative problems compare each line with f'(x). A valid alternate method is therefore not marked wrong.
Safety decisions
- SymPy's parser uses
eval, so input passes a strict whitelist first. Exponents are capped, chained powers are rejected, and lines and line counts are limited. - Only parsed math goes to the wording models; names and free text do not.
- Provider failures log only the exception class.
- Reporting uses seat numbers, not names, and includes a
simulatedcolumn.
Limits of the design
- Class state is in memory, so restarting clears it and the service must run as one instance.
- The student roster is fake and there are no logins.
- Rules cover four problem types: distribution, moving terms, factoring and derivatives. Pre-Calc is marketing scope, not built.
Handwriting model results
From the teammate's repo: 1,000 held-out HME100K line crops, exact match after normalization, Wilson 95% intervals.
| Reader | Exact match | 95% CI | Character error | Cost for 1,005 lines |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Qwen3.5-4B + our LoRA | 76.5% | 73.8 to 79.0 | 0.036 | about $0.05 |
| Gemini 3.6 Flash | 57.9% | 54.8 to 60.9 | 0.119 | $0.88 |
| Qwen3.5-4B base | 52.0% | 48.9 to 55.1 | 0.113 | about $0.05 |
| Gemini 3.5 Flash-lite | 51.1% | 48.0 to 54.2 | 0.171 | $0.37 |
| Claude Sonnet 5.5 | 49.1% | 46.0 to 52.2 | 0.662 | $0.36 |
The LoRA is rank 16, one epoch over 20,016 lines, trained on Tinker for $1.88 in 2 hours 9 minutes. It learned the same dataset's conventions, so its lead over hosted models is an upper bound.
Separately, on 29 labelled images, step-by-step judging left all 18 valid lines after a mistake unflagged, while whole-page grading flagged all of them.
The fine-tuned reader is not what reads photos in the live app. Gemini does that today. Say this honestly if asked. An earlier deck draft said 54% to 84%; those numbers were replaced because they do not appear in the repo's results.
Statistics plan
H0: fine-tuning does not change reading accuracy. H1: it does. Because models read the same images, the right test is McNemar's exact test; several models need Cochran's Q plus corrected pairwise tests. The published intervals for the LoRA and base model do not overlap, but the paired p-value still has to be calculated from the raw predictions.
| Test size | Smallest detectable gain | Approximate 95% CI at 80% accuracy |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000 lines | 3.4 points | ±2.5 points |
| 500 lines | 4.8 points | ±3.5 points |
| 100 questions | 10.7 points | ±7.8 points |
| 100 questions across 5 models, Bonferroni | 13.9 points | ±7.8 points |
Assumes 80% power, alpha 0.05 and 15% disagreement. A 24.5-point gain means at least 24.5% of lines disagreed, so 15% is too low for this pair. At 30% disagreement, 1,000 lines still detects roughly 5 points, and the observed gain is far larger. Recalculate from raw predictions.
The original plan mentioned 1,500 test items, with 1,000 public and 500 uploaded documents. Published results cover only the 1,000 HME100K lines. The 100-question benchmark can rank cost, but cannot separate close models on accuracy.

Entrinsik Informer
Informer is a data and reporting platform that is especially common in education. It can read a REST Web API datasource, SQL databases over JDBC, or uploaded files. BigQuery support was not confirmed.
| Dataset | Feed | One row per |
|---|---|---|
| Attempts | /api/informer/attempts | Checked attempt, verdict, first wrong line, misconception, self-corrected |
| Alerts | /api/informer/alerts | Teacher alert, status, help requested, teacher rating |
| Misconceptions | /api/informer/misconceptions | Misconception, attempts, students affected, reteach idea |
- Get an Informer instance from the challenge organizers or Entrinsik. A demo request form was filled in, but its CAPTCHA has to be completed by a person, and submission was not confirmed.
- Set
INFORMER_TOKENon Cloud Run through Secret Manager. - In Informer, add a REST Web API datasource for each feed with the header
Authorization: Bearer <token>. - Build reports: common misconceptions by course, self-correction rate, and help requests over time. Add the model comparison through a file upload.
- Fallback: add
?format=csv, download the data, and upload it as a Workspace datasource.
The feed has been tested locally. It has not been connected to a real Informer instance. Informer also supports apps built with npx informer-init, REST calls, webhooks and MCP tools, which could be a stronger challenge entry.
The feed is in memory, so run demo attempts after the final deploy.
Hardware: desk tripod
The original arcade-button box was replaced by a 3D-printed tripod about 35 cm tall that holds a camera about 30 cm above a sheet of paper. Mounts use the standard 1/4"-20 tripod thread, so they also fit a store-bought tripod.
Hub, leg (three), column, light collar, diffuser in clear or white, hinge, head, and the phone clamp or camera cradle. STLs are in app/static/models.
Buy
XIAO ESP32S3 Sense, 16-LED WS2812 ring, 3 M3x16 bolts and nuts, M5x25 bolt and wing nut, 1/4"-20 thumbscrew and nut, USB cable, power bank.
Status
Parts are watertight and collision-checked in software. Nothing has been printed or test-fitted. Set PHONE_W and PHONE_T for your phone.
Data path: button press, JPEG over Wi-Fi to Cloud Run, Gemini transcribes, algebra engine checks, teacher site updates, and the camera polls for its light state. Phone photos use the same server but a different route, so tokens stay off browsers. The two devices never talk to each other.
Two firmware sketches exist because two sessions built this at once. Keep one, wire to match it, and delete the other.

Next, in order
- Test a real handwritten photo on the live site with a phone.
- Get Informer access, set
INFORMER_TOKEN, connect the feed, and build one dashboard. - Choose one camera route and firmware, then delete the other.
- Print the mount, flash the board, and rehearse with a backup video.
- Fill in the deck's ask and team details, and verify the market figure.
- Decide whether to wire in the LoRA or deploy the teammate's app.
Risks and things to get right
- Dataset license: check HME100K before pitching commercial use. MathWriting appears to be CC BY-NC-SA, which forbids commercial use.
- Public endpoints: demo controls are open, so anyone with the URL can reset or simulate class data. Add auth before any wider sharing.
- Costs: an always-on Cloud Run instance and Gemini calls spend credits. Watch billing.
- Privacy: real student photos need logins, consent, retention rules and a FERPA and COPPA review. Do not use real student data in this demo.
- Accuracy claim: say which system each number describes. 76.5% is the fine-tuned reader on one dataset, not live app accuracy on classroom photos.
- Naming: several edtech products already use the name Teachify, so check before investing in the brand.
- 1,005 vs 1,000: the cost column uses 1,005 lines and accuracy uses 1,000. Be ready to explain it.
- Wi-Fi: hackathon networks can block small devices. Bring a phone hotspot.

# Teachify
Catches the exact line where a student's math goes wrong, then tells the teacher who needs help and what to ask.
- **Student app** (`/student`): step-by-step work, a nudge that doesn't give the answer, XP for fixing your own mistake.
- **System A, error detection** (`app/detector.py`): SymPy finds the first invalid line and matches it to a known misconception.
- **System B, teacher brief** (`app/ai.py`, `/teacher`): Thinking Machines or Gemini words the advice. It can't change the math verdict.
- **Desk tripod** (`/node`, `hardware/`): holds a phone or camera over the student's paper, with a status light and a live 3D twin.
## Run locally
```bash
python3 -m venv .venv
.venv/bin/pip install -r requirements.txt
.venv/bin/python -m uvicorn app.main:app --port 8080
```
Open http://localhost:8080. With no keys, the app runs on its verified catalog text and labels it that way.
## Connect the AI providers
Copy the variables in `.env.example` into your environment. The app tries Thinking Machines first, then Gemini, then the catalog.
- **Thinking Machines:** Tinker serves a checkpoint you trained, so it needs a sampler checkpoint path as well as an API key.
- **Google Cloud:** run `gcloud auth application-default login` locally. On Cloud Run, the service account needs the Vertex AI User role.
## Deploy to Google Cloud Run
Class state lives in memory, so run exactly one instance.
```bash
gcloud services enable run.googleapis.com aiplatform.googleapis.com cloudbuild.googleapis.com
```
```bash
gcloud run deploy teachify --source . --region us-central1 --allow-unauthenticated --min-instances 1 --max-instances 1 --set-env-vars GOOGLE_CLOUD_PROJECT=YOUR_PROJECT
```
Put `TINKER_API_KEY` in Secret Manager rather than in a plain environment variable.
The Dockerfile should also run on any container host, including whichever platform your hackathon requires.
## Connect Entrinsik Informer
Informer pulls Teachify's results from a read-only feed. Teachify never stores Informer credentials.
| Dataset | URL | One row per |
|---|---|---|
| attempts | `/api/informer/attempts` | Checked attempt: verdict, first wrong line, misconception, self-corrected |
| alerts | `/api/informer/alerts` | Teacher alert: status, help requested, teacher rating |
| misconceptions | `/api/informer/misconceptions` | Misconception: attempts, students affected, reteach idea |
Add `?format=csv` to any URL for a spreadsheet. Rows use seat numbers such as `seat-12`, never names, and include a `simulated` column so you can filter out demo data.
1. Generate a token and store it in Secret Manager:
```bash
python3 -c "import secrets; print(secrets.token_urlsafe(32))" | tr -d '\n' | gcloud secrets create informer-token --data-file=-
```
2. Add it to the Cloud Run service:
```bash
gcloud run services update teachify --region us-central1 --update-secrets INFORMER_TOKEN=informer-token:latest
```
3. Check the feed:
```bash
curl -H "Authorization: Bearer $(gcloud secrets versions access latest --secret informer-token)" https://YOUR-SERVICE-URL/api/informer/attempts
```
4. In Informer, add a REST/API datasource for each URL, with the header `Authorization: Bearer <token>`, and set a refresh schedule. If REST setup isn't available, download the CSV and upload it as a spreadsheet datasource instead.
The feed is off (HTTP 503) until `INFORMER_TOKEN` is set. Data lives in memory, so it resets when the server restarts; a pilot should save events to a database such as Cloud SQL.
## Hardware
- **No hardware:** `python3 hardware/sim_node.py` uses the same protocol as the board.
- **ESP32:** set your Wi-Fi and server URL in `hardware/teachify_node/teachify_node.ino`, then wire a capture button to pin 3 and the WS2812 ring to pin 4. The firmware sends the press and drives the light; it doesn't take photos yet.
- **Desk tripod:** a tripod holds the camera about 30 cm above a sheet of paper. The head takes either mount with a 1/4"-20 thumbscrew, so the mounts also fit a store-bought tripod:
- `phone_clamp.stl` grips a phone by its long edges, camera facing down. Set `PHONE_W` and `PHONE_T` in `build_model.py` to your phone and case.
- `camera_cradle.stl` holds a Seeed XIAO ESP32S3 Sense with the lens facing down.
- **Print:** `hub`, `leg` (three times), `column`, `collar`, `diffuser` (clear or white), `yoke`, `head`, and the mount you need, all in `app/static/models/`. Parts are exported where they sit in the assembly, so lay each one flat in your slicer.
- **Hardware to buy:** 3 M3x16 bolts and nuts for the legs, an M5x25 bolt and wing nut for the tilt hinge, a 1/4"-20 thumbscrew and hex nut for the mount, and a 16-LED WS2812 ring (44.5 mm).
- **Setup:** place the paper between the two front legs. The USB cable runs down inside the column and out of the hub.
- **Change the design:** edit and rerun `hardware/build_model.py` (needs `pip install numpy trimesh manifold3d`), then bump `MODEL_VERSION` in `app/static/node.html` so browsers load the new files.
## Before real student use
This is a demo. It has no login, stores data in memory, uses synthetic names and leaves its API open. A real pilot needs authentication, a database, a FERPA and COPPA review, and vendor data agreements.
## Tests
```bash
.venv/bin/python -m pytest -q tests
```
PROJECT_STORY.md84 lines
## What it does
It's 11:40 pm and Prince is on problem 7. He knows his answer is wrong. He doesn't know which line.
Going through math problems is hard, and as a past tutor, we want our kids to have the best chance of success. We loved tutoring, but there was only one of us to go around.
Teachers can't close that gap alone. They average 53 hours a week, against 44 for similar working adults (RAND 2024). Asking for help is hard too: about 40% of high schoolers regularly hesitate to admit they're confused (Character Lab Research Network, 1,000+ students).
Teachify finds the first line that went wrong and gives a hint, never the answer. It covers Algebra 1 and 2, Pre-Calc and Calculus, for middle and high school. Take this work:
$$
3(x+2) = 2x + 11 \quad\Rightarrow\quad 3x + 2 = 2x + 11 \quad\Rightarrow\quad x = 9
$$
The correct answer is \\(x = 5\\). Only the first step is wrong, and everything after it follows correctly. The tutor points at that step and stops there:
> "Look at your first step. What does the 3 multiply?"
We have one product for home and three for school:
- **Personal Tutor:** at home, a student takes a phone photo of their work and gets a hint, not the answer.
- **Enterprise A, Detect:** a desk camera watches the work, and a light turns on when a step is wrong.
- **Enterprise B, Assist:** an AI helper talks to the student over headphones.
- **Enterprise C, Quiet mode:** Teachify auto-grades the work and sends flagged lines back to the student.
About 77% of public schools ban phones in class (NCES), so the classroom products use a desk camera.
## How we built it
The app runs five steps:
1. The camera takes a photo of the work.
2. Gemini reads each line.
3. Gemini judges each line against the line above.
4. SymPy re-checks each algebra step.
5. The student gets a hint only when Gemini and SymPy agree, and never the answer.
For an equation problem \\(P\\), each line should keep the same solution set, so the first error is:
$$
k^{\ast} = \min \lbrace k : S(L_k) \neq S(P) \rbrace
$$
In the example, \\(S(P) = \lbrace 5 \rbrace\\) but the first step has solution set \\(\lbrace 9 \rbrace\\), so \\(k^{\ast} = 1\\).
We also fine-tuned our own handwriting reader: Qwen3.5-4B with a rank-16 LoRA, trained on Thinking Machines' Tinker. One epoch over 20,016 handwritten lines took 2 h 9 min and cost $1.88. The fine-tuned reader isn't wired into the live app yet.
The app is built for Google Cloud Run. Entrinsik Informer is the reporting layer, fed by a token-protected, read-only REST feed that uses seat numbers rather than names. A 3D-printed tripod holds a phone or a XIAO ESP32S3 Sense camera about 30 cm above the page, with swappable 1/4"-20 mounts and a status light. We used Claude Code to help build.
[Before submitting, state which of these ran live: Cloud Run, Entrinsik, the desk camera, the printed tripod.]
## Challenges we ran into
- **One mistake can look like many.** After the wrong step in our example, \\(x = 9\\) is correct for the line above it. Whole-page grading marks those later lines wrong anyway, so we judge each line against the one above.
- **Handwritten math is hard to read.** Even the best hosted model we tested read fewer than 6 in 10 lines exactly.
- **Phones are banned in most classrooms.** That pushed us to a desk camera and a tripod that holds it above the page.
- **A fair comparison is hard.** Our reader was trained on the same dataset's conventions as the test set, so its lead over hosted models is an upper bound.
## Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our fine-tuned reader scored highest of the models we tested on 1,000 held-out HME100K line crops, by exact match after normalisation (Wilson 95% CI where shown):
- **Qwen3.5-4B + LoRA:** 76.5% [73.8, 79.0]
- **Gemini 3.6 Flash:** 57.9% [54.8, 60.9]
- **Qwen3.5-4B base:** 52.0% [48.9, 55.1]
- **Gemini 3.5 Flash-lite:** 51.1%
- **Claude Sonnet 5.5:** 49.1%
Because of the shared dataset conventions, treat the gap over hosted models as an upper bound.
On 29 labelled images, step-by-step judging left every valid line after a mistake unflagged (18 of 18). Whole-page grading flagged them all (0 of 18 left unflagged).
## What we learned
- Judging a line against the line above stops one mistake from spreading across the page.
- A small model fine-tuned for one narrow job can be cheap: this run cost less than two dollars.
- A benchmark result needs its limits stated next to it.
- Reporting can work on seat numbers, without student names.
- [Add one thing your team learned from a teacher or from building the hardware.]
## What's next for Teachify
We want to wire the fine-tuned reader into the live app. A school pilot needs logins, a database, and a FERPA and COPPA review.
